Grant Project History

2023-2024

Little Mountain Neighbourhood House - $35,000

  • Facility Facelift: Little Mountain’s current facility, including furnishings, were in urgent need of improvement. Until they move, the proposed facelift will indicate to staff, volunteers and all the community members that the facility is welcoming and inviting, and that they care about the current physical space that participants/community members inhabit on a daily basis.

Coalition of Neighbourhood Houses - $35,000

  • Westshore Neighbourhood House Feasibility Study: In the Capital Regional District, the five municipalities that constitute the “Westshore” community – Langford, Colwood, View Royal, Metchosin and the Highlands – do not have a neighbourhood house, though they are a rapidly growing region of the province.  A feasibility study will help clarify the needs for a neighbourhood house in this community.

St. Barnabas - $35,000

  • Barnabas Neighbourhood House Phase I: There is strong interest in the community amongst both residents and partner organizations to support the development of a neighbourhood house out of the space owned and managed by St. Barnabas Anglican Church in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood in New Westminster.  This project will support its development by initiating some of the key initial steps including research, strategic planning and space design to ensure that St. Barnabas can move forward with its vision to share its space with a neighbourhood house in an efficient and impactful way.

2022-2023

Alexandra Neighbourhood House - $40,000

  • Child care expansion project:  This project will create a much needed additional 200 licensed child care spaces in Surrey at seven locations. Five of the new sites will be in local schools, ensuring that children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 will have a welcoming, safe and creative space in the mornings and after school.  Funding for this expansion project will be used to purchase program supplies and equipment needed to establish these seven new locations.

Collingwood Neighbourhood House - $9,361*

  • Bridge funding for seniors' food programs: These funds support the continuation of two key programs for older adults: the frozen meal program and grocery shopping program, for two months.

*Please note that the urgent-time sensitive grant stream has since been discontinued.

Marpole Neighbourhood House - $30,000

  • New neighbourhood house start-up phase III:  As MNH emerges out of a post pandemic state, the staff, board and community will continue to work together to establish MNH as a stable entity and place-based point of connection for the Marpole community. This process has taken longer than initially anticipated therefore; additional support is required to ensure that a proper infrastructure is constructed.  Marpole will use these funds to: develop a strategic plan, strengthen governance, work towards financial sustainability, implement adequate and effective staffing structure, engage in community re-connection, work towards reconciliation and continue to expand program development.

Gordon Neighbourhood House - $37,000

  • Elevator Modernization:  The elevator at Gordon NH was installed when the House was first built in 1985. The elevator is past its useful life and modernization has been recommended. Although they secured funding for the elevator’s modernization, pandemic inflation significantly escalated the total cost of the project and caused them to need to seek supplementary funding.

2021-2022

Burnaby Neighbourhood House - $10,000

  • Funding for merging societies: Burnaby NH is taking over the leadership of three additional societies.  With the Foundation’s funds, they will hire a consultant to review and identify the best organizational structure to lay the foundation for continuous growth of the NH.

Marpole Neighbourhood House - $50,000

  • Start Up Phase II:  as the newest neighbourhood house in Metro Vancouver, Marpole experienced a very early, abrupt interruption of its start-up phase. While they were able to make many strides, there were significant setbacks caused by COVID-19, which negatively impacted their ability to meet their goals to stabilize. Due to Covid 19, MNH had to close its doors in its infancy (8 months after opening), provoking massive setbacks in the progress needed to guarantee a successfully operational House over the long-term.  The funds provided will help to promote stabilization at the NH.
